...and another one rises in another part of the world... i'm thinking about Canada right now. It's 10am at the moment... I know the sun has long rised in Canada (Ontario), but I it's morning there while the sun will be setting here soon. I definitely miss Canada and all that comes with it. :-(
Jordan. Desert Mountains everywhere. Red Sea and Dead Sea surround. Despite the hustle and bustle of Aqaba, I still feel like I am in the middle of nowhere. I feel peace and serenity when I look at the landscape…the blending of the brownish red of the desert with the blue of the Red Sea with the green of the plantation… it’s nice not to see so much commercial, but rather something more traditional.
Saudi Arabia is a mere 10km away, while Israel is 3km away. And of course, who can forget the land of the pharaohs, Egypt, a ferry ride across. I feel like I am in the heart of something. The heart of history, where so much of what we know from the past has taken place. We have all heard about the great ancient history of Egypt, and of course, who can forget Israel! And then we have the religious significance of Saudi Arabia.
But what about Jordan? I feel like there was so much transition in Jordan. The feet of our ancient leaders, whether it be religious like Jesus or whether it be of royalty, have walked these lands. Hell, a mere 3 hours away from me is Jerash – an Ancient Roman site where we still see the grand amphitheatre built by the very hands of the Ancient Romans.
But why don’t we know Jordan, the way we know Egypt or Israel? Unless you have taken a course in religion/culture or archeology, you may only know Jordan as a country in the Middle East.
Looking out of my balcony, you can feel the richness of Jordan in the air. The richness of its culture blended in with its ancient history. I feel like there is still so much mystery hidden in its desert-rous mountains. Maybe some ancient treasure buried deep below or even a golden temple that was struck by a hard sand storm, never to be found again.
Even though I have been here before, I am still curious about Jordan – what is it
about Jordan? I mean I had no problem figuring it out when I was in Egypt, but in Jordan… there is just something about this place, something bigger than what we see. Hopefully I will figure this out when I do my tour around the country next week. I hope the ancient town of Petra will have answers for me. Or maybe the Romans can tell me when I go to see Jerash. Or who knows, the Dead Sea might uncover something – maybe finally a living fish!
The Way I See It… Jordan is a mystery waiting to be uncovered – or is it?
