Food, food, food. Apart from visiting family and friends, food plays such a big role for me when I “balik kampung” (return to my village). And who can blame me? The culture of food here in Malaysia is exquisite. The fusion in cooking demonstrates the cultural diversity that makes Malaysia. You will find Indian, Chinese and Malay dishes all coming together so harmoniously. The Malaysia cuisine is an amalgamation of the 3 main cultures that exist in Malaysia. Especially when you eat at hawker stalls, you can really get the taste of the 3 cultures. I feel like every moment of the day is an event to eat.
For breakfast – nasi lemak and milo
For brunch – roti canai and teh ais
For lunch – nasi campur with lots of ulam. And don’t forget the ais bandung.
For afternoon tea – teh tarik and goreng pisang and all the kueh kueh like kueh lapis.
For pre-dinner snack – satay kajang and soya bean
For dinner – kuey teow and teh ais
For post-dinner snack – nescafe and fruits/rojak
*look below for a brief description of the foods
AND if you’re still hungry, before bed, I would suggest “nasi lemak” antara bangsa since they open late. But beware, the food can also be so fattening, especially when you have all the “lemak lemak” dishes like nasi lemak. Mostly because of the ingredients like ghee or coconut milk. And also the amounts of sugar in many of the dishes/drinks – crazy!!! But one thing you don’t find as a prominent problem is obesity. There are lots of heart problems, like clogging of the arteries, but I must say, you don’t see much obesity despite the fattening ingredients in the food. Well also, probably that no one in their right mind would eat my full menu above! Lol. Haha Maybe I would! Jks. But it definitely is easy to get carried away especially when you haven’t had this food in a long time! I’m telling you, one you’ve had Malaysian food in its true sense (e.g. hawker food), you won’t turn back! It is so delicious that whenever I make a plan to visit my friends in Malaysia, it’s always over a “let’s go makan (eat)” event. And of course, my nenek (grandma) will spoil me with all the nyonya delicacies! YUMMY!
